About the portrait and the appeal
The iconic Armada portrait occupies a key place in British art and history. It commemorates the most famous conflict of Elizabeth's reign, and has been instrumental in making her one of the most recognizable historical figures today.
The painting is owned by descendants of Sir Francis Drake, and if the fundraising campaign is successful it will enter Royal Museums Greenwich’s collection, securing its long-term conservation and future in public ownership. It will go on display at the Queen’s House, practically on the site of the Greenwich Palace birthplace of Queen Elizabeth I, and now home to one of the nation’s finest art collections. Unless the £10m is raised within a limited timeframe, it will be sold on the open market, and is likely to go to a private buyer overseas.
