Macau on the Move
Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site welcomed a visit by 25 high-performing secondary school students from Macau, China, on 28 July.
Selected for the visit by the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau of Macau, the students aged between 15 and 17 were in London for four weeks to explore World Heritage Conservation in the UK. The group was able to see for themselves the multiple characteristics that make Maritime Greenwich so important as a cultural World Heritage Site. During their visit they were able to learn something of the Site's impact on British history through its royal association, architecture, landscape design and scientific achievements in astronomy and navigation.
The group enjoyed a lively, informative and interesting tour of the Old Royal Naval College and Royal Observatory during the afternoon. Brief talks were given by Peter Marsden, Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site Coordinator, Sarah Duthie, Public Engagement Director, ORNC and Louise Devoy, Curator, ROG. The tour of the ORNC site including the newly refurbished visitor information centre and magnificent Painted Hall and Chapel was led by Daren Clarke, Volunteer Explainer. The vist was followed by a well-earned dinner on Greenwich's riverside before the group departed by Thames Clipper from Greenwich Pier.
