Autumn Arts Festival for Greenwich
Greenwich Performs, a new festival based on traditional roots, launched in the heart of Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site this autumn, featuring music, theatre and outdoor events. This celebration of the arts is based in part on the old Greenwich Festival and brings together classical music, jazz, Shakespeare, children’s theatre, poetry, early music, Oktoberfest and a community Fun Palace.
Special appearances include local resident Blake Morrison, who will be presenting an anthology of prose and poetry based on South East London, and Michael Frayn, who will be discussing his play Here, which is being revived by director James Haddrell at Greenwich Theatre.
A variety of activities include organised walks in Greenwich and Greenwich Park, free recitals at the Old Royal Naval College Chapel and St Alfege Church, and tours of some of the most charming historic houses in Greenwich.
Greenwich Performs is very much aimed at the local community and performances are taking place at Greenwich Theatre, the Old Royal Naval College, St Alfege church, Oliver’s Jazz Bar, the Queen’s House and the Trinity Laban Building. The festival kicked off on Sunday 30 September with Handel’s Esther at St Alfege Church, plus fireworks and songs from the Rock Choir at The Point. The middle weekend sees a Fun Palace of family activities organised by Emergency Exit Arts and the festival concludes with a ballet adaptation of Dracula at Greenwich Theatre on 14 October.
